The heat is on: There are only a few weeks left until you drop your college kid off at school, and you may feel like there are still a million things left to do. But if you’ve been following the Countdown to College checklists, you should be just fine when it’s time to say goodbye.
This month, you’ll want to take care of some last-minute items on your list. Here are some suggestions for August:

- Get packing supplies
- By now you and your college kid should have a good idea of what you’re going to pack—but do you know what you’re going to pack it in? Start getting your packing materials together so you’re not scrambling for supplies on moving day. - Set your itinerary
- Are you traveling far? Get ready for your road trip by creating an itinerary to make sure you arrive with enough time to unpack, walk around campus and get your kid settled. That way, you won’t have to rush your goodbyes.
- Make time to have your “talks”
- From cleaning tips and smart money management, to studying habits and partying rules, there’s a lot to discuss before your child leaves. Instead of sitting them down for one long lecture, why not talk about one topic over lunch—and then touch on another while running errands? Set aside time throughout the month to have real conversations with your kid.
- Review the rules
- Move-in day is going to be hectic, so read up on all the rules before you get to campus. If you know exactly what you’re supposed to do, it should make the move a little easier.
- Get them revved up
- Is your kid taking their car to school? When’s the last time it had a tune up? Remind your son or daughter to take their car in for an oil change, brake check, transmission test—they should get it all tuned up before they head out of town. And don’t forget the car insurance.
